Team rider Luis Alberto Cruz recently travelled to the Mondial du vent in Leucate, France, the first stop on the World Kiteboarding League tour. Part of a contingent from the Dominican Republic, Luis arrived a few days early to get used to the strong gusty off shore conditions Leucate offers. The event was run over 7 days, with the first few days dedicated to the qualifier rounds. Luis, mostly using his smaller size kites and being one of the lighter riders battled with the strong gusty conditions making it challenging to land his more technical tricks.
He easily progressed through the first 2 heats, but then battled with round 3 with first a heat against strong opposition being 5 times world champion Aaron Hadlow and strong South African rider Oswald Smith. Next, Luis had an unlucky heat where he battled to land his better moves and bowed out of the contest at round 3 narrowly missing the Elite League.
Luis: “ Conditions were really challenging and I got unlucky, but I look forward to the next contest! “
With Luis out of the Freestyle contest, he concentrated on the Big Air exhibition. With massive jumps and kite loops landing high double handle passes and “Slim chances”, Luis progressed to the Final. The final of the Big Air saw Luis take the win with explosive and entertaining moves much to the crowd’s delight. In a weird twist of Fate, the Final also saw up and coming talent Valentin Rodrigues from Columbia opting to borrow one of Luis’s Escape and claiming the 3rd spot. 1st and 3rd in the Big Air Exhibition on Peter Lynn Escape, that has to tell you something! Well done Luis, we look forward to the next round of the World Kiteboarding League. Special thank you to Kelvin Corniel for the management and advice.
